Embossing Leather
Unlike leather carving, embossing does not require too much skill to apply. It does, however, require extra tools and embossing plates as well as some degree of skill in the initial setting up of the process.
You will need to purchase a Fly Press or Clicker Press (the former if you can locate one is by far the cheaper option as a clicker press can set you back $3-5,000. Add to that the cost of the embossing plates ($100-$200 each + artwork). In addition, this may require a block base plate and fitting out to take your embossing plates. A sturdy bench is also required to be able to take the weight of the Fly press and the rigors of the heavy usage the bench will have to endure.
As with carving leather, you will need to use Vegitanned leather (for the best results) as this will compress when damp better and more permanently than other types of tanned leather. First you will have to select your leather project, cut out the shape and put in all the necessary holes, stamped patterns, etc.
Then place the damp leather under the press and simply apply the pressure to the plates with whatever machine you are using (Clicker Press, Fly or Screw Press). Its that simple. Again, if you need any advice please contact me and I will do my best to help you. Happy embossing!
