Step 5

Step 4

Coloring of the leather is done with both leather dyes and stains. These can be either water, spirit, or acrylic based, all of which are applied by hand. Even a tan coloring is achieved through dyes. Use a damp sponge to dye larger areas.

The natural color of the leather after the tanning process is very pale, or a skin color, in comparison to the finished product.  Small areas can be highlighted in different colors, and the choice is yours as this stage.

Once the dyes and paint have dried, a finisher (like Tandy Super Sheen) is applied to the whole surface using a damp sponge, and applied in gradual amounts applied in several coats to seal and protect the leatherwork from UV light and the elements.

After this has dried, the leatherwork has a good wax applied to help waterproofing, and also feeds the leather. This should be done periodically to help the leather survive into old age. The project (if required) can then be assembled using lacing or stitching, and rivets if required.  Also buckles, eyelets, catches, and various fitments are now attached.  Again all work is done by hand.
